A stumble at the E note.

The young couple next door got their five-year-old a piano a few weeks ago, and I’ve been listening to her slow progress through our wall. Before the piano, there was a violin. They always provide the best for her. The best instruments, the best tutors.

Mary had a little…

The music halts. A curt shout. Muffled yelling. Then, a thud. There is no cry. Never is.

Mary had a little lamb. Its fleece was white as snow…

  1. It’s never too dark. The darkness in our stories shines a light on the darkness of our realities. That said, the mistreatment of children really bothers me. I have a bad feeling the perfection demanded of the little one isn’t going to end well for anybody, except those who take advantage of her wounded soul as she grows.

  2. Great use of a sweet children’s song to contrast with the ugly reality of this little girl’s life. The ending is great. If it’s dark then it’s dark. That’s the story you’re telling and it’s well worth telling.
